Holland - Dutch Jupiler League

The Jupiler League is the second professional football division of the dutch football system. It was formerly known as Eerste Divisie (first division) but has been renamed in recent years after the sponsor, currently beer brand Jupiler. The dutch Jupiler League is not to be confused with the highest Belgian competition, the Jupiler Pro League. The champion of the Jupiler League is being promoted to the highest division, the Eredivisie. Other teams may also be promoted by way of play offs with teams that were 16th and 17th in the Eredivisie.

Relegation from the Jupiler League was not possible between 1972 and 2009. Since 2010 however, relegation is possible again, yet not as strict as in other European Leagues. The number 18 of the Jupiler League is being relegated to the amateur Topklasse only if the champion of this latter amateur competition makes use of the right of promotion. If they don't want to be promoted, no team from the Jupiler League is being relegated. Currently FC Zwolle is the 2011 2012 champion and is playing in the Eredivisie during the 2012 2013 season. All time record holder is FC Volendam with six titles (and thus at least five relegations from the Eredivisie). The current top scorer is coincidentally playing for FC Volendam, Jack Tuyp who made 20 goals during last season.

The Jupiler League, or Eerste Divisie was founded in 1956 and counts 18 teams. In this 2012 2013 season MVV Maastricht leads the pack, yet theres more than half a competition to play, although their near future looks bright since they are three points ahead of long time Eredivisie club Sparta Rotterdam and FC Dordrecht. Excelsior, the third club in professional football from Rotterdam (besided Feyenoord and Sparta), has to fear for relegation as they are in 18th place now.

This is remarkable as Excelsior has played in the Eredivisie for quite some time in the last ten years. The eerste divisie does not draw many big attendances, never more than 10.000, but serves as a competition where young talents can excel, so teams from the Eredivisie can pick them up in later years. After 8 playing rounds 221 goals had been scored, averaging more than 3 goals per match (3,06). This is considerably higher than in other second divisions and is definitely a reason to watch the Jupiler League through our live stream! So tune in on fridays and saturdays to watch all nine matches.
