Germany - German 2. Bundesliga

The second highest football competition in Germany, the 2. Bundesliga, was founded in West-Germany in 1974 and consists nowadays of 18 clubs who are playing for promotion to the Bundesliga. Since 1991-1992 former East-German clubs have been participating in the 2. Bundesliga. The current champion is Greuther Furth who are playing in the Bundesliga now. Eintracht Frankfurt ended up second, and Dusseldorf fulfilled the rostrum with a third place. The top two teams, Greuter Furth and Eintracht Frankfurt have been promoted to the highest competition in Germany, the Bundesliga where they will play against top teams like Dortmund, Schalke and Bayern. Third place finisher can also be promoted if they win a play off. This is not uncommon in many European Leagues. The number 16 can avoid relegation to the 3rd Liga by winning from the 3rd placed team from this 3rd liga. This way no further play offs are needed and the number 16 of the competition can really show they belong in the 2. Bundesliga.

Last season, 2011 2012, Karlsruher SC, Alemannia Aachen and Hansa Rostock were relegated to the 3rd liga. 855 goals were scored in 306 matches, averaging 2,79 goals per match. Top scorers were Alexander Meier, Nick Proschwitz and Olivier Occean who all made 17 goals, slightly less than 1 in 2 matches, which is not very high. The 2. Bundesliga is not a low ranked competition like in other European countries, as the average attendance was 17.230 per match. Also many clubs that are now playing in the 2. Bundesliga have well known names to the general public. For example clubs playing in the 2. Bundesliga are 1860 Munich, Vfl Bochum, and MSV Duisburg. Promoted to the 2. Bundesliga were champion SV Sandhausen en runner-up VfR Aalen, who were directly promoted. Jahn Regensburg won from Karlsruher SC in the play offs and was also promoted to the 2. Bundesliga, after having been absent for eight years.

Currently, in the 2012 2013 season the competition is led by Eintracht Braunschweig, closely trailed by former Bundesliga club Hertha BSC and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. SV Sandhausen, Jahn Regensburg and MSV Duisburg have to work themselves up in the rest of the season as they are in the danger zone. Recent promoted club VfR Aalen on the other hand is doing very well and are currently placed 5th. Make sure to watch the season's ending and play offs through the free live stream of our site.
