KNVB Beker 2012-2013
The KNVB beker is the oldest competition of the dutch football federation and was founded in 1898. The KNVB is comparable with the Coppa della Italia and Copa del Rey with almost the same format and the fact that the winner advances to the Europe League. The competition of the KNVB beker is a knock-out with incidentally group phases. Clubs that may participate come from the Eredivisie and Jupiler League with additions from the top amateur leagues.
The final of the KNVB beker has been held in the Kuip, home stadium of Feyenoord Rotterdam, since 1989. Feyenoord's rivals however, AFC Ajax hold the record for most wins of the KNVB Beker, namely 18 times. Feyenoord trails in second place with 11 wins, after which PSV follows with 9 wins. Most recent winners are PSV (2012), FC Twente (2011), AFC Ajax (2010) and Heerenveen (2009). Ajax has played in 23 KNVB beker finals. Whenever two clubs qualify for the UEFA Champions League and both of them play the final of the KNVB beker a second match between the losing semi-finalists is needed to fill up the empty Europa League slot. This has happened once in the history of the KNVB beker, namely in 1998.
Both PSV and Ajax had qualified for the Champions League through the standing in the regular competition, but also had to play against each other in the final of the KNVB beker. So to decide who would play in the Europe League the match between losing semi-finalists Heerenveen and FC Twente was arranged. Heerenveen won with 3-1 and proceeded to the Europe League, then known as Europacup II. Ever since dutch football has not had such a luxurious position and only delivers one club to the Champions League directly. Due to the fact that not only professional teams participate in the KNVB Beker large scores are not uncommon. The all time record stems from 1903/04 when HFC won 25-0 from AC & FC VVV.
It still stands today as largest win in the dutch top competitions. The final used to be played after all regular competition matches were played, but since a few years the KNVB Beker is played just before the last round of the regular competition.
