DFB Pokal 2012-2013

DFB Pokal 2012-2013
The German football cup DFB Pokal is played with 64 teams, in which all Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga participate. It was founded in 1934 en was formerly known as Tschammerpokal. It has been called DFB Pokal since 1952. Bayern Munich holds the record of total wins with 15 title. The 2011 2012 champion is Borussia Dortmund though. The winner of the DFB Pokal qualifies for the Europa League the next year.

The competition starts of with 64 teams, all 36 from Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga along with the top 4 from last years 3. Bundesliga qualify automatically. The rest of the slots are filled up by top finishers from the Regionalliga. Although a clubs from the 1. Bundesliga usually wins the cup, upsets are not uncommon. Most notable is the loss of Hamburger SV to VfB Eppingen in 1974, the first time that a professional club lost to an amateur club. In 1990 SpVgg Furth managed to take a win over Borussia Dortmund. Whenever an upset happens it is huge news in the German media as it is so rare and slightly shameful.

Bayern Munich hold the record with 15 wins, but lost to Borussia Dortmund in the 2011 2012 season, preventing them from a 16th title. Bayner however won 5 of the last 10 DFB Pokals, solidifying their status as all time DFB Pokal Champions. The 2012 2013 DFB Pokal will end with the final in Berlin on 1 June 2013.
