One of the most accomplished professional football clubs of Germany is SV Werder Bremen. Although Bayern and Dortmund are at the absolute top, playing against Werder is no easy win for either of them. SV Werder Bremen was founded in 1899 as a sports club. Since then the football department of SV Werder Bremen has evolved into a successful German top club. Werder play in green shirts and white shorts, reflecting the home colours, which can also be seen in the club's crest. The stadium of Bremen is called Weserstadium, named after the river Weser which flows through the city.
Weserstadium holds a capacity of over 42,000 and was built in 1923 and completely renovated in 2008. The 2013 trainer of SV Werder Bremen is Thomas Schaaf, a former player of Werder between 1978-1995. Schaaf is a real club man, as he has never played for a different clubs and has been the manager of Werder since 1999, being the longest serving trainer in the 1. Bundesliga. President of the club is Klaus-Dieter Fischer, also a very loyal club man.
Werder Bremen won the domestic 1. Bundesliga four times, in 1965, 1988, 1993 and most recently in 2004. They were runners-up seven times, the last time being in 2008. Also Werder Bremen won the double in 2004, when they won the DFB Pokal as well as the National title. The DFB Pokal was won six times, 2009 being the most recent win, and Werder came second four times. Internationally Werder Bremen has had some success, but not as much as Dortmund or Bayern. They have three notable results: winners of the 1992 Cup winners' Cup (beating Monaco 2-0), winners of the 1998 Intertoto Cup and runners-up in the 2009 Europa League (losing to Shakhtar Donetsk 1-2).
Former notable players of SV Werder Bremen are Per Mertesacker, Andreas Herzog, Markus Rosenberg and all time club top scorer Marco Bode. However Dieter Burdenski holds the record for most appearances, having played 479 matches from 1972 until 1988. In the current squad notable players are Eljero Elia, Clemens Fritz and Aaron Hunt.
Werder have a regional rivalry with Hamburger SV from Hamburg, which, like Bremen is also a city in the north of Germany. The matches between these two German top clubs are highly anticipated and is called Nordderby. Of the 139 meetings, Hamburger SV has won 48 times, Werder has won 50 times and 41 times the match ended in a draw.
