S.L. Benfica (Sport Lisboa e Benfica) is a professional Portuguese football club from the capital city of Lisbon. The Benfiquistas play their home matches in the Estadio da Luz which holds a capacity of 65,000 seats. Benfica was founded in 1904 as Sport Lisboa. The Club colours which are also seen in the club's home kit are red and white. The manager of Benfica is Jorge Jesus, a former Portguese professional football player. Chairman of Benfica is Luís Filipe Vieira, a businessman in real estate. Benfica play in the Primeira Liga and have been very successful among other top clubs from Portugal like FC Porto and Sporting CP.
The Primeira Liga was won 32 times by Benfica which is a Portuguese record, although in the past 15 years the Primeira Liga was only won twice, in 2004 and 2010. The national Cup, the Taca de Portugal was won 24 times, which is also a record, the last time being 2004, thus winning the double. Unlike FC Porto who have a decent international record, Benfica haven't had as much European success as their fellow rivals. The Champions League was won twice, but a very long time ago, namely in 1961 and 1962. Benfica have not won the defunct Cup winners' Cup or the Europa League.
Notable players from the past are Eusebio, the all time top scorer of Benfica, Nuno Gomes, Michel Preud'homme and Karel Poborsky. Top players in the 2013 squad are Luisao who has played 346 matches since 2003, Pablo Aimar, Jardel and Maxi Pereira. As both Benfica and FC Porto have been the most successful clubs in the Primeira Liga, their rivalry is intense and matches between them are often important for winning the Primeira Liga as points count for double.
Matches of Benfica are attractive, certainly when playing FC Porto or fellow city rival Sporting CP, who in recent years have somewhat lost the battle for the Primeira Liga.
