Braga, or Sporting Clube de Braga is a professional sports club from Braga, Portugal. The sports club is best known for its football club, which plays in the highest Portuguese division, the Primeira Liga. Braga was founded in 1921 and its official name is Sporting Clube de Braga. Colours of the crest are red and white. These colours are also seen in the club's home kit, when they play in their home stadium Estadio AXA, which has a decent capacity of some 30,000 seats. Braga is managed by Jose Peseiro who formerly managed Sporting CP, Panathinaikos and Rapid Bucuresti. Chairman since 2003 is Antonio Salvador, a Portuguese businessman. Sponsor of the club is sports wear Macron, an Italian company.
SC Braga has not been as successful as the big three, Porto, Sporting and Benfica, Yet they were the runners-up of the Primeira Liga in 2010. Also they won the Portuguese Cup once, although a long time ago in 1966. Internationally Braga has has moderate success, as they won the Intertoto Cup in 2008 and became Runners-up in the 2011 UEFA Europa League, when they lost to fellow Portuguese club FC Porto with 1-0. however Braga did defeat Liverpool, Dynamo Kyiv and Benfica in the knock out stages, which is certainly an achievement.
SC Braga has some notable players in their current squad which exists of 28 players. Captain of Braga is the Brazillian Alan who has been playing for SC Braga since 2008. Ruben Micael, who plays for Braga while on loan from Atletico Madrid and Ruben Amorim who has also been on loan, from fellow Primeira Liga Benfica. Meanwhile Braga has also loaned players to other clubs, like Beto (Sevilla) and Pizzi (Deportivo La Coruna). Notable former players of SC Braga are the late Miklos Feher who died from heart failure during a match in 2004, Nordin Wooter, who has also played for Ajax, Zaragoza and Panathinaikos during his career and Kaka who has player for many clubs and who is on loan at Coruna currently (being owned by Videoton).
Strangely enough, Braga does not have rivalries with other top clubs from Portugal and the Primeira Liga Benfica, Porto or Sporting CP. Their main rival and absolute enemy is Vitoria S.C. From Guimaraes, a nearby city. Their match is super tense and not seldomly violent. Children are forbidden to enter the stadium. Their rivalry goes back to the middle ages when Guimaraes acted as capital whereas Braga was the religious centre of Portugal.
