Manchester City, playing in the English Premier League, the highest division in England, was founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton). In 1887 the name was changed to Ardwick Association Football Club and in 1894 it got its name it still has today, Manchester City Football Club. Manchester City currently plays its home matches in the City of Manchester Stadium, after having played at Maine Road from 1923 till 2003. The club colours are light blue and white. When playing away, Manchester City wears an all dark red outfit with yellow accents. Manchester City is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan from the United Arab Emirates since 2008 when the Abu Dhabi United Group purchased the club. The chairman however is Khaldoon Al Mubarak, a businessman from the Emirates. Manchester City's head coach is Roberto Mancini who has been the manager since 2009.
For a long time Manchester City was the inferior club from Manchester, as Manchester United had been so dominant during the 90's and early 00's. However since the acquisition of Manchester City by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, a lot of money has been spent on new players for the club, improving the results of Manchester's 'second' club. Not surprisingly, Manchester City won the Premier League in 2012 after fourty-four years. City now has won the Premier League/ First Division three times, with more to come in the following years. Also they won the FA Cup in 2011, making it five FA Cup wins in total. Internationally, prizes have yet to be won, as the only big prize was the 1970 UEFA Cup Winner's Cup.
Notable players of City are Maicon, Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Carlos Tevez. With the new ownership of the UAE Sheikh, the possibilities seem endless, however eleven players don't guarantee one real team. Future will tell us whether it will work.
Obviously Manchester City has a huge rivalry with Manchester United. In the past City was of unequal strength to United, but the tide has changed somewhat. Their derby is called the Manchester Derby. United leads with 69 wins over 164 matches. City won 45 encounters and 50 games ended in a draw. Also matches against other English top clubs like Chelsea or Arsenal are highly anticipated and draw a lot of attention.
