Girondins de Bordeaux is a French professional football club from the southwest city of Bordeaux, that plays in the highest division the Ligue 1. The club was founded in 1881 as Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux and was part of a larger sports club. The colours of Girondins are dark blue and white, both are shown in the crest and home and away kits. They play their home meetings in the Stade Chaban Delmas in Bordeaux, which holds a capacity of over 34,000 seats. Meanwhile negotiations have started about a new stadium that would have a capacity of over 40,000 seats. The current trainer is Francis Gillot, a former French football player who has played for Lens, Valenciennes and Strasbourg. He has been the trainer of Girondins de Bordeaux since 2011. The Chairman is Jean-Louis Triaud, member of a family of wine makers. He has been the chairman since 1996.
The national title Ligue 1. was won six times, most recently in 2009 when Bordeaux stayed ahead of Marseille and Lyon, two of the most successful French clubs. This title came exactly ten years after their fifth win in 1999. Strangely, Girondins are doing better in the Ligue 1. than in the national cup, the Coupe de France. They did win the Coupe three times, but the last win dates back to 1987, when Bordeaux beat Marseille. In Europe, Girondins have not had as much success. The only real achievement was being the runners-up of the 1996 UEFA Cup, which was won by Bayern Munich.
The current team of Girondins de Bordeaux has some internationally known players, like Jaroslav Plasil who is the captain. Also notable are Cheick Diabate who was on loan at Nancy and Ajaccio in the previous years and David Bellion, who has been playing for Girondins since 2007. Former notable players are all star Zinedine Zidane, who played for Bordeaux before he played for Juventus and Real Madrid, Pauleta and Dieter Muller.
Archrival of Bordeaux is FC Toulouse who are also from the South-west of France. The derbies of Bordeaux and Toulouse are called Derby de la Garonne, named after the river Garonne which streams through both of these cities. Also on a national level, rivals are the traditional top teams from France, Olympique de Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Lyon, who have been dominating the French Ligue 1. for years. Winning from either one of these three is huge in Bordeaux. So watch these matches live by signing up for free!
