Besiktas J.K. Is a coordinating sports club in Istanbul that, besides live football, also competes in basketball, volleyball and wrestling. Besiktas was founded in 1903 and its official name is Besiktas Jimnastik Kulübü (Besiktas club of gymnastics). Besiktas is named after the district it is based in, Besiktas in the European part of Istanbul. Besiktas football club is a professional team in the Turkish Super Lig that play their home matches in an all white kit and their away matches in all red. The home stadium that lies in the Besiktas area is called Inönü Stadium, which holds a capacity of 32,000 seats. Besiktas is trained by manager Samet Aybaba, former player of Besiktas between 1977 and 1988. Chairman of Besiktas is Fikret Orman, a businessman in tourism and construction.
Besiktas is the third best club of Turkey and of Istanbul. Both Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have won more titles than Besiktas. However, Besiktas has won 13 national Super Lig titles (against 18 for both Fenerbahce and Galatasaray), the most recent one in 2008 2009. In that year, 2009, they also won the Turkish Cup, thus winning the double. Besiktas have not done so well in European Leagues. Only once Besiktas advanced to the Quarter-finals of the Champions League (1987) and once to the Quarter-finals of the Europa League (2003). Nevertheless Besiktas is seen as a large club in Turkey, often battling it out with Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. Some famous players have played for Besiktas during their career in the past, such as Pacal Nouma, who played twice for Besiktas. (2000-2001 and 2002-2003). In the current squad, notable players are Dentinho, who is on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk and French international Julien Escudé.
Besiktas has huge rivalries with Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, although a match between the latter two attracts more attention. In the Besiktas Galatasaray derby, which has been played 332 times, Galatasaray leads with 115 wins, whereas Besiktas has won 105 times. 111 games ended in a draw. The match is also played outside of the field with the large fanbases of which some of them are hooligans, only wanting to hurt the other side. There's a lot of tension and importance in the Besiktas Galatasaray derby to say the least. The other Besiktas Istanbul derby is against Fenerbahce. They have played 333 times against each other with 126 wins for Fenerbahce, 121 for Besiktas and 86 draws. Turkish matches are full of passion that sometimes may escalate in riots and fighting. In derbies, this rivalry becomes even greater. Going to one of them is fun, but watching them through the Unibet football live stream (free sign up) is much much safer!
